International Specialty Products (ISP), Wayne, NJ, introduced Optiphen Plus, the company’s second globally approved paraben-free and formaldehyde-free preservative. The preservative is designed specifically for use in lower pH systems. It is a propriety blend of phenoxyethanol, sorbic acid and an emollient base for acidic to neutral pH hair and skin care products requiring broad-spectrum preservation. This combination of ingredients offers effective protection against bacteria, yeast growth and mold growth while imparting emolliency, according to ISP executives. It has a range of applications in aqueous and emulsion-type personal care formulations. The company also introduced two new product platforms to the personal care industry—microencapsulation and liquid crystal technologies. Products under the microencapsulation umbrella carry the trade name ISP Captivates, while liquid crystal products will be part of the ISP Colorflow family. Both product lines resulted from ISP’s acquisition of the business and assets of Hallcrest Limited, a manufacturer and marketer of technologies for the personal care, home care, oral care and food industries. In other ISP news, a new brochure for formulators in the spa market highlights several of its innovative personal care ingredients in 19 different formulations. ISP presents a collection of spa prototypes for skin, body, scalp and hair designed to inspire formulators of both retail and private label spa products. The brochure is available online at www.ispcorp.com.
